A great show of compassion amidst turmoil in Iran

The aftermath of last week’s Presidential Election in Iran, in which President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was pronounced winner still sends jitters across many hearts. Thousands of protesters, loyal to Ahmadinejad’s main opponent, Mir Hossein Mousavi, took to the streets, chanting “death to the dictator” and protesting what they consider a rigged elecion. Bloody clashes between Mousavi’s and Ahmadinejad’s supporters took place on the streets. Those, however, were not to be compared to the brutality meted out by the riot police and plain-clothed volunteer militia who went all out to quell every protest. Indeed it was a cruel battle.

The picture below depicts a typical scene during the fracas:

It’s appalling that in recent times, all across the world, elections turn out to be the death warrant for so many young persons. While leaders, nay dictators, manipulate the system in their favour, in a bid to cling unto power till “only God knows when”, the common citizen who benefits little or nothing from such leaders ends up paying the ultimate price.  As party loyalists slog it out on themselves and the police, the leaders are in the comforts of their homes watching.

However, what I really want to write about is embedded in a photograph I found. It clearly shows that amidst the chaos, hatred and savage beatings in Tehran, someone could still find a place in his heart to show compassion and mercy to a supposed enemy. Below is the picture that touched my heart and inspired this post:

Need I say more? This is a clear evidence that deep inside everyone of us, in spite of the hate and the rage, we can still find a place to show that we are still human, and not animals. It’s a clear show of human sympathy borne out of a sincere heart. I wonder what might have gone through this young man’s mind, that he could all of a sudden decide to help this enemy; an enemy who most likely wouldn’t have done the same for him. I suppose he may have realised in one split second that they were venting their anger on the wrong person; that even though this policeman is an agent of the state, he isn’t the cause of their outrage.

This is a great lesson for everyone of us. Oh, that you could find a place in your heart to forgive that supposed enemy. Oh, that the world could, in one split second, be like this nameless fellow. Then, all our hate will be gone forever and we’ll surely know that we can still love one another. Then, surely, the world will be a better place.

Very true man. That all men were created good, and even though we started doing evil, the good part of us still remains in bits.
