Hey!

Welcome to Glorious Solutions Centre – where problems are solved. It’s my pleasure to be up and running again this bright new day. “Not by power, nor by might, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord”. Indeed, all thanks to our Father in Heaven, who has kept us alive and healthy, by His power. Looks like it’s gonna be a sunny day in the Garden City of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. What’s the weather forecast like over where you are? Wanna know it? It shall be sunny all across Nigeria with temperatures warm enough to keep you smiling all day-long. Late in the afternoon, cloudy skies of problems may build up but strong heavenly winds will blow from the Highest to dispel all your problems. Hmmm, how about that? So, you have a wonderful day.

Alright, let’s get down to business. A couple of days back, we published the story of John, a 400 level Undergraduate who needs our help and advice to determine his next decision – a vital one for that matter. Summarily, John is pursuing a course he has no interest in, because his parents forced him to read that particular course. Full Story? Please visit the Sharing Room for more details. Already, some responses from concerned persons are pouring in.

Howbeit, John’s predicament is not perculiar to him alone. In fact, many Nigerian students end up pursuing their parents’ dreams, whether it fits into their ultimate purpose/dream or not. Many parents don’t even care to understand the strengths of their children, and guide them in pursuing a career in that strength. This is one major reason why we have dissatisfied graduates all over the country, who have no passion for what they actually studied in school.

Now, do you agree to this assertion or not? Hold on, your answer is required in an ongoing poll on this site. If you are a graduate, the question is: Given the opportunity (to turn back the hands of time), would you still read the course you read in the university? In other words, would you pursue the same career path all over again? And for the undergraduates currently in school, given the opportunity, would you rather choose a different course of study or are you satisfied with your present choice?

So, you’ll find the ongoing poll just to the right. Get over there and please let’s have your response. It’s either a YES, NO or NOT SURE (if you are still lost). The poll closes this Friday.

Cheers!!!

GLORIOUS

It’s a traditional belief that you need a university degree to become successful in life. Here’s how it goes – “go to school, study hard and get a good job”. In that sense, a good job equals success. But that’s not always the case. Infact, a look at the world’s richest and arguably most successful men and women shows that you really don’t need a university degree to be a success in life.

Today, we begin with the world’s richest man. For many years, as far back as I can remember, this man has borne the title “the world’s richest man”. However, many may not have realized that he’d been overtaken two years ago by none other than America’s most beloved investor, 78-year old Warren Buffet. However, majorly due to the ongoing Global Economic Crisis which started taking its toll last year, Warren Buffet’s fortunes has plummeted by a whooping Twenty-Five Billion Dollars ($25billion) in only 12 months, paving way for our man in focus to once again regain his prestigious enviable position. Yea, you got it right. He is the one and only BILL GATES, the 53-year old founder of Microsoft Corporation. According to Forbes.com, Bill Gates lost $18 billion last year but regained his title as the world’s richest man with a current Net Worth of $40 billion (at one point, before the Internet bubble burst, he was worth over $100 billion, making him the world’s first centibillionaire!).

World's Richest Man

Howbeit, what is of interest to me in this piece is the fact that not many people know that this world’s richest man actually dropped out of the prestigious Harvard University. In fact, Bill Gates is probably also the world’s most famous college drop-out. Gates dropped out of Harvard to work on his start-up company, then called Micro-Soft in 1975, when he was just 19 years old. Under his shrewd (though other people may call it predatory and unlawful) business practices, Gates grew Microsoft into a behemoth (and depending on your point of view, hated) corporation. Gates recently left the day-to-day operations at Microsoft to devote more time into philantrophic endeavor, namely the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which is currently the second largest charitable foundation in the world.

By the way, Forbes list of the world’s richest included 1,125 billionaires with at least 73 of them, like Bill Gates, having dropped out of some stage of schooling. Now I am not advocating that you drop out of school, no please, far from it. You see, these men didn’t drop out to watch daytime television on the couch. They left school to work hard, indeed harder than ever at their true dreams. They were convinced about what they wanted to make out of life, they pursued their passions, and even sacrificed the mere accolade of being called graduates; today, they have changed the world. Their success stories prove that skill, good ideas and passion are sometimes more important than a university degree. Infact, Bill Gates recently testified before the US Congress on the importance of improving the U.S. education system.

<blockquote
“Too many of our students fail to graduate from high school with the basic skills they will need to succeed in the 21st-century economy, much less prepared for the rigors of college and career”, said Gates.

Hey Bill, if that’s the case in the US, how much more in Nigeria where even getting admission into the higher institutions is getting more and more elusive and prospective students have to make all kinds of choices (perhaps after several trials) that more often than not have nothing to do with their core areas of competence. The craze to at least be tagged an undergraduate is so high that nobody minds what course he/she finally gets to study in the university. Even the admission process itself is so flawed and manipulated by the university authorities that sometimes they even feel they’ve done you a favour by offering you admission into Plant and Animal Science when you’d applied and possibly qualified for medicine. And with Nigeria’s craze for certificates (obtained or manufactured), who would dare dropout of school? Impossible? Nah! I have a true life example I’ll be bringing over to the centre in a few days, a young lady who recently, against all odds, choose to stop going in the wrong direction – studying a lucrative (but wrong) course – so she could achieve a greater goal tomorrow. Wanna hear all about it? Then stay tuned to this centre. Trust me, in this country, there are still people who think outside the box, and I want you to join this category.

Alright, before we go, please get over to the Poll Section (just right of your screen) and cast your vote now. In other words, if you could turn back the hands of time, would you still choose the same course you studied/are studying in the university? Would you still pursue the same career path or would you make a change? Your candid answer is highly appreciated. Thank you.
