Hi,

A very lovely day to you. “Thank God it’s Friday”, that’s the first thing I get to see on a friend’s profile as I log onto my system. “What is wrong with all these employees”, I wish to ask. Why is it that people who have found the work they so desired to guarantee their daily bread seem to be dissatisfied after a short while, and can’t wait for the weekend, when I suppose they get some well-deserved rest? While millions are bombarding heaven (or whatever they pray to) with daily prayers for employment and job opportunities, those who supposedly have been blessed and favoured with one seem to be asking for greener pastures. Is this the case of one man’s meat is another man’s poison? Or better put, this is life in a vicious cycle, what my dear friend, Robert Kiyosaki calls “The Rat Race”.

I personally think we have a greater problem than unemployment in this country. It is a phenomenon I’ve decided to call “Misemployment“. It appears to me that we have more and more people who are working in places they don’t like working in, doing jobs they have no passion for and coping with bosses they’ll rather fire. Now, I’m not blaming anybody for being where they don’t wanna be, afterall, “man must wack”. Yeah, that’s right. I guess at the end of the day, it boils down to having a daily bread, being able to feed the family and perhaps a monthly paycheck to look forward to, a paycheck that never seems to be enough.

But seriously, this calls for concern because I am conviced that a quick survey of the employees in our Public and Private Sector would reveal that this is true – we have more dissatisfied employees than those who are even unemployed. Trust me, so many may not voice it out, but as surely as the sun rises from the east, this saying is true. Indeed, so many people are in the wrong places; some by necessity, some by sheer luck, some even have jobs they don’t even want thrust at them by godfathers and mothers. This explains why you find people whom you expect the best of services from fall short of your expectation. It’s either there’s no smile on their faces, no customer relationship, no zeal for the job and of course, no satisfaction. I just came back from a bank a couple of hours ago where the Customer Service Personnel is noted for her rash behaviour and rude interactions with customers. What she’s still doing in the Customer Care Unit, I really can’t tell. Infact, the experience You find the same within our institutions, secondary schools, Federal and State parastatals etc. I guess that’s why the government, some years back, introduced this SERVICOM thing. If that is really working, I don’t know.

The same MISEMPLOYMENT phenomenon applies in the Nigerian political arena. Infact, it even gets worst there, where political offices are allocated to persons who are not even fitted for the responsibilities, both in character and learning. The result of this is too obvious, even the blind can see it.

Hmmmm, so much wahala. But this problem can be solved. How? That’s my topic for another day. Just stay tuned to this channel. Don’t miss out!

Yes ooo, you can stop cleaning your eyes now. There’s nothing wrong with them – you are reading correctly. Na serious matter, SERIOUSLY.

Just yesterday, Thursday, February 26 2008, the passing-out ceremony for the 2008 Batch “A” corps members was held all across the 36 States of Nigeria and the FCT, as tens, if not, hundreds of thousands of fresh Nigerian youths completed the one-year mandatory National Youth Service Corps scheme.

Marching into the LABOUR market

In Lagos alone, about 7315 corps members successfully passed out. I was able to catch a glimpse of the figure in Enugu on TV, over 2300. You can imagine what it would look like in other parts of Naija. The question on every lips is: “where are these ones headed”? Simple answer – the already oversaturated LABOUR MARKET. And trust me, most of these ones will end up just like their predecessors; those that get employed get what I call “misemployment”. Don’t worry, I’ll explain that much later. Then, the over 80% that don’t get to find anything tangible in the next couple of years qualify for the breaking news vacancies.

Hey! Don’t think I just made that up. I was discussing with a friend two days ago, and he told me how a friend of his was codedly offered employment at a militant base. Boy! The money was good. Did the friend take the job? If na you, you go collect am? However, I’m afraid, if we don’t do something now, sooner than later, such headlines will be commonplace in our media and you’ll find parents telling their long-overdue unemployed children: “you sef, u no dey see ur mate dey make am for militant base? Abeg jooo, go submit ur CV”. May that not be our portion, in Jesus Name.

Howbeit, the issue I am addressing here is the Number 3 Key Area I mentioned in my very first post. Please if you have not read that post, go back and do so. The Pillar of Problems – Your Employment. Of course, we all know what the pillar of a building does. Infact, the major problem in this aspect is that more and more people are getting “misemployed” than those who are unemployed. That’s a fact. That is why today we no longer here of job satisfaction. People just get employed for one reason -paycheck at the end of the month. Doesn’t matter whether where you are working has nothing to do with your chosen career path. Who even has a career path – less than 1%. And that’s the bane of our problems.

Well, these are the issues we will be discussing in this category soon and we’ll be proferring real solutions to this problem. Meanwhile, we will commence building from the very first phase – The Soil Analysis – Your Mindset.
